This little painting I did en plein air, as I sat perched on a hillside above the coast in Cambria, California. Getting to this spot necessitated a bit of a hike, so I did not carry an easel or a stool along, and no log or rock gave me this close up foreground view of the brilliant ice plants, so I contented myself with setting up directly seated on the sand. I painted for as long as possible until I could no longer deal with the ants crawling all over. They weren't biting, but they were increasingly scurrying across the paper as well as me.
