Catherine McCargar: We are living within a beautifully magnificent creation, and I enjoy with gratitude the ability to re-express through paintings some of what I see. After years of studio work, mostly floral and still life, these days I also paint landscapes regularly en plein air, sometimes along with a group of fellow painters. I might finish these paintings in the studio, or refer to them for larger pieces. Plein air painting allows me to appreciate the nuances of color, and the intensity of light in a place. It is altogether challenging, exhilarating and peaceful. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, so I have within easy reach no end of grand vistas, ocean to vineyards, charming towns, and stunning botanical specimens, from nasturtiums to sequoias as posers for my work. I paint mostly with transparent watercolors, emphasizing and celebrating color itself.
